Mary Stevens ‘Boughlee’ has very kindly donated her considerable collection of Rough Collie Kennel Advertisements taken from Christmas Numbers, Supplements and Annuals over a period of more than sixty years.

These two examples from the Boughlee Collection of Kennel Advertisements graphically illustrate the enormous change in style between the first and last quarter of the 20th century.

Left - Tom Purvis’ full page Danvis Advertisement, which appeared in the Dog World Annual dated 1978, is dominated by a striking professional photographic image of Ch Danvis Ladyvale Blue Mist to which is added a short summary of the dog’s achievements in the pervious year.

You can see a full size facsimile reproduction of these files, as mounted by their current owner, in Adobe Acrobat pdf format  by clicking on either image.

This half page Sonnenburgh  Advertisement, dated 1915,
features Sonnenburgh  Squire, who gained his title  in 1915, a big winning dog  of the period, and details his  every win during the previous twelve months in addition to a detailed description, and record of his winning progeny, with but a single relatively small photograph.

The collection, which is extensive, not only provides pictorial evidence of many Collies that have previously been little more than names on a trophy, in a pedigree, or description by some chronicler, they also provide a detailed record of the changing trends in kennel advertisements during the first thee quarters of the twentieth century, as can be seen in the two examples here. In order to maintain the format of these pages, they are being copied to Adobe’s pdf format files, with a record of their original source included in the Alt description. The Images have already been scanned and will be stored separately, although the final quality may not be suitable for hard-copy publication.
